‘Celebrating Human Rights’

Share

Regarding the article “Celebrating Human Rights” (Editorial Page, Dec. 10), I was heartened with what seemed one more step in considering ourselves a part of the human race which inhabits Earth. I had not, however, come far down the list of human rights when a thought struck me. It is well and fine to declare the rights we have as human beings, but what about the responsibilities?

People should have basic rights as human beings but I do not think anyone can have these without responsibilities. If we take the view that we are “owed” numerous rights we just continue to perpetuate the same selfish, self-centered philosophy that has put the world where it is today.

The title asks “What, exactly, was promised in the covenant of 1948?” This is a valid question but more importantly what promises will be given in exchange.
