2 Asian Ferries Sink; 100 Feared Dead
Authorities said Sunday that more than 100 people drowned or were unaccounted for after two ferryboats--one of them carrying 183 schoolchildren on an outing--sank in the South China Sea.
The China News Service reported Sunday that an overloaded Chinese ferry carrying four crew members and the schoolchildren capsized “a few days ago” off China’s southern Hainan Island, drowning 55 people and leaving seven missing.
The boat was “heavily overloaded” and had sailed only about 200 yards from shore when it capsized, the report said. No other details were available.
Off the central Philippines in the South China Sea, another ferry sank Friday, and the military said Sunday that 44 of the estimated 46 people aboard are missing.
A radio report said the Liplip sank off Semirara Island, 190 miles south of Manila, on Friday morning after it was lashed by strong winds and high waves.
