Drought, floods and hurricanes wreaked havoc on world food supplies this year, and experts are worried about the outlook for next year, U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization Director General Edouard Saouma said in his year-end report. “The outcome of next year’s harvest will be crucial,” the director of the Rome-based agency said. “In 1989, global (grain) output must increase by an unprecedented 225 million tons, or 13%, to meet food needs and rebuild stocks.”
