McCarron Gets Credit for Japan Win

The editor of the Daily Racing Form said Monday that Chris McCarron had been given credit for the $1-million purse his horse earned in winning the Japan Cup, but added that McCarron’s purse total for the year recently shrank because of a miscalculation.

McCarron, locked in a close battle with Jose Santos for the jockeys’ national money title, said Sunday that he thought the Racing Form had taken away the $1-million purse that Pay the Butler had earned in the Japan Cup, perhaps because the stake was a foreign race.

Said Fred Grossman, editor of the Form: “We’ve always given American jockeys credit for the purses they earn in foreign races. This year’s Japan Cup is no exception. But McCarron did lose some money because of a mix-up not related to the Japan Cup. It may have been a typographical error.

“But that’s the reason, when we put out the weekly standings, that we always qualify them by saying that they’re subject to audit.”

McCarron thought he should have gone ahead of Santos Sunday when he won the $1-million Hollywood Futurity with King Glorious.

Racing Form figures Monday showed that McCarron still trails Santos by about $50,000. Santos, after a victory and a third-place finish in races Sunday at Aqueduct, had a total of $14,598,809, with McCarron at $14,548,914. Both jockeys have broken the record of $13.4 million, set by Laffit Pincay in 1985.

With Aqueduct open in the afternoons and the Meadowlands running at night in nearby New Jersey, Santos is able to ride at 2 tracks most days. McCarron, however, may have a shot at winning a $500,000 race Saturday at Hollywood Park, should Pay the Butler run in the Hollywood Turf Cup.
