WORLD : Roh Orders Crackdown on Protests
In an unusually tough, nationally televised speech today, President Roh Tae Woo ordered a crackdown on all illegal demonstrations and said violent protests are a major threat to the nation’s democratic and economic stability.
The opposition said the government is afraid of losing power. Top opposition leader Kim Dae Jung said Roh’s directive was “a plot schemed by fascists not to lose their invested rights.”
He said government hard-liners are attempting to create a false sense of crisis to frighten people into supporting Roh and justify restraints on government opponents.
