IN BRIEF : Soviet Hockey Team Defeats U.S.

The Soviet Union defeated the United States 4-2 Tuesday night in the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, using superior defense and 36 saves by goaltender Aleksey Ivashkin.

The Soviets, who moved to 2-0 in the eight-team round robin tournament, extended their lead to 4-1 when Sergei Gomolyako scored at 4:34 into the third period. The U.S. team closed out the scoring as it began it, with a power-play rebound at 14:37. The United States, now 0-1-1, plays Canada, 1-0, on Thursday. The Soviets play Sweden, 1-0, also on Thursday.
