Local News in Brief : Orange : Bone Marrow Recipient in Stable Condition

Share

The first adult to receive a bone marrow transplant in Orange County was in stable condition Thursday at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, a spokesman said.

Kenneth Summersgill, 31, who is suffering from Hodgkin’s disease, was injected Dec. 20 with bone marrow taken from his hip several months ago, hospital spokesman Dennis Gaschen said Thursday.

“The patient is in protective isolation, which is normal, and he’ll be in there for another 3 weeks,” Gashcen said.

“He’s listed in stable condition, and that’s a good sign. That means that everything is running its course, and we’re hoping the bone marrow takes. There are no complications at this point.”

If the transplant works, Summersgill, who lives in Colton in San Bernardino County, will produce white blood cells to fight the disease and increase his chances for survival, doctors said.

Childrens Hospital of Orange County has performed the operation for the last 2 years on children with leukemia and malignant tumors.
