The Yugoslav Parliament refused to pass a law that the International Monetary Fund demanded for continued financial support, and the Yugoslav Communist Party newspaper Borba quoted an unidentified Cabinet minister as saying the government should resign as a result. Parliament voted against a government austerity law to limit wages in hard-pressed public services such as health and education. Premier Branko Mikulic said the IMF insisted on the law before agreeing in June to grant Yugoslavia a one-year standby credit of $416 million. The Cabinet minister said Parliament’s decision “could endanger the rescheduling” of $1.6 billion of Yugoslavia’s debt falling due next year.
