Belgian Jacky Ickx, driving a Peugeot 405 turbo 16 automobile, and Italian Claudio Terruzzi, on a Cagiva motorcycle, won the special test portion of the Paris-Dakar rally that swept across the Libyan desert for the first time Thursday.

The special test covered 191 miles. The cars and motorcycles will complete another special test today in Libya.

Ickx, one of the favorites to win the auto division, finished the first test in 1 hour 23 minutes and 10 seconds.

In the motorcycle division, Terruzzi finished the special test in 3:13:25.

Officials said 241 cars and 155 motorcycles began the rally that will wind through Spain, Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Mali, Guinea, and Senegal before the 6,730-mile rally ends at Dakar on Jan. 13.

The event claimed 6 lives last year, including 3 African spectators. A total of 28 people have died in its 11-year history.
