A group of Israelis and Palestinians announced plans for a March 18-20 conference in New York in an effort to push the Israeli government to negotiate for peace directly with the Palestine Liberation Organization. Conference coordinators from the left-wing New Outlook magazine and the Palestinian newspaper Al Fajr told reporters in Jerusalem that the meeting would be the first such event jointly organized by Israelis and Palestinians. Among those being invited to attend are Israeli members of Parliament and Palestinians from the Israeli-occupied territories, as well as members of the Palestine National Council, the Palestinian parliament in exile. “This is going to be the year of the dialogue,” said Moshe Amirav, who broke with the Likud Party because of its refusal to talk with the PLO.
