Snow and freezing rain on Friday turned city streets into a giant skating rink from New York to Washington, D.C., and a blizzard dumped 18 inches of snow on Idaho’s mountains.

Gusty 25-m.p.h. winds blew new-fallen snow off rooftops and iced over streets in New York City. Taxis and cars skidded into one another, denting fenders and tying up traffic across much of mid-town Manhattan during the morning rush hour, officials said.

The city sent out 300 salt trucks and 1,000 plows, but they fought a seemingly losing battle against a winter storm that was expected to deposit up to 6 inches of snow on the metropolitan area.

Air Traffic Disrupted

Snow and ice closed the Atlantic City, N. J., airport for three hours Friday morning. The National Zoo in Washington was shut down for the day as up to 5 inches of heavy, wet snow fell in the capital’s Virginia and Maryland suburbs.

Up to 5 inches of snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain over much of Pennsylvania, and 2 inches fell in the northern mountains of North Carolina. Grand Rapids, Mich., reported 5 inches of snow.

The New Jersey government began shutting down at 2 p.m. because of the snow. Princeton and Caldwell both reported 5 inches of snow, while Pitman had 4 1/2 inches.

Across the Delaware River, 3 inches of snow fell on Philadelphia in a three-hour period.

Meanwhile, a blizzard moved through eastern Idaho, dumping up to 18 inches of snow in mountain areas and 6 inches in the valleys. Gusty winds clogged roads with drifting snow, officials said.
