Metal Chairs

Any Metallica fan could have told Steve Hochman what would happen to the floor chairs at the Long Beach Arena prior to the Metallica concert (“Rock ‘n’ Roll ‘n’ Violence,” Dec. 25).
Obviously, Avalon Attractions failed to comprehend after the “Monsters of Rock” show that Metallica fans like to slam dance, and that floor chairs are unnecessary obstacles that they will destroy. Also, increasing security still cannot possibly control thousands of screaming fans.
However, there is a simple solution. Whenever a speed-metal band comes to town, remove the floor chairs, make the concert (or at least the floor section) general admission, and the concert won’t result in destruction of property or personal injury.
If Bill Graham does it for the Cow Palace in San Francisco, why can’t Avalon do it for the Long Beach Arena? Neither the band nor the fans should be blamed for a problem the promoter is capable of controlling.
