- Synbiotics, which manufactures monoclonal antibody-based products used to detect and treat human and animal diseases, has formed UniSyn Corp., a company that will manufacture and market “high-density mammalian cell-culture production systems.”

UniSyn will make the cell cultures for Synbiotics as well as for other companies that use the cells to manufacture biotechnology-based diagnostic and pharmaceutical products, Synbiotics spokeswoman Wendy Johnson said.

UniSyn will be competing against several established companies for a market that is estimated at $150 million to $175 million, Johnson said. UniSyn will use a proprietary manufacturing process that Synbiotics believes will be competitive with established rivals, Johnson said.

Biotechnology companies often use mammalian cell-culture to produce the biological substances that are used in commercial products, Johnson said.

Synbiotics established the new company because the new product manufacturing process “was not within the main focus of our company and we didn’t want it to be a diversion,” Johnson said. The new company will “start out slowly with a couple of employees,” Johnson said.
