Central American leaders announced that they will postpone a summit aimed at restarting the stalled regional peace process. The delay was proposed by President Oscar Arias Sanchez of Costa Rica, architect of a 1987 peace plan for the region, who said that the presidents of the five concerned nations should wait until after President-elect Bush takes office Jan. 20. Foreign Minister Ricardo Acevedo Peralta of El Salvador said that the summit, originally scheduled for Sunday and Monday in San Salvador, is to take place sometime next month.
