Nation : Retired Navy Man Charged With Trying to Sell Secret Data to Soviets
A retired Navy chief petty officer was arrested today on charges that he tried to sell highly classified information about anti-submarine warfare tactics to the Soviet Union, the FBI said.
Craig D. Kunkle, 39, of Virginia Beach, Va. was arrested by FBI agents on charges of espionage, gathering or delivering classified information to a foreign government and disclosure of classified information. FBI spokesman Charles W. Steinmetz said the arrest resulted from an undercover investigation that began last month and no information was passed to the Soviets. Kunkle, a 12-year veteran of the Navy who was discharged in 1985, could be given a life sentence if convicted.
