The U.N. World Food Program said Wednesday that it will provide emergency food worth $29.1 million to nearly 1.7 million refugees in East Africa.

The organization said it is sending more than 42,000 tons of food to Ethiopia to help 420,000 people fleeing civil war in Sudan and a further 350,000 refugees from Somalia.

It plans consignments of cereals, sugar and other foods for the next four months to 180,000 Sudanese stranded by fighting in the south of the country, and to more than 600,000 people in Mozambique displaced by civil conflict there, the organization said.
