In an attempt to appease the public, Prince Charles will visit the Scottish town of Lockerbie where a Pan Am Boeing 747 crashed last month, killing 270 people, Buckingham Palace said today.

His decision to make the visit on Jan. 24 follows an outcry over the absence of any member of the Royal Family at a memorial service for the victims of Britain’s worst air disaster. The mourners were led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the outgoing U.S. ambassador, Charles Price. Charles’ younger brother, the Duke of York, created ill feeling when he visited Lockerbie, where 11 local people were killed, immediately after the Dec. 21 crash. The duke said he felt sorry for everyone affected but particularly for the Americans.
