Perry Scores 45 to Lead SDSU; USIU Men Lose

Chana Perry tied one school record and came within one point of tying another in the San Diego State women’s basketball team’s 94-80 Big West Conference victory over Fresno State Saturday night at Peterson Gym.

Perry, a 6-foot 5-inch senior center, led all scorers with 45 points, one short of the Aztec record of 46 set by Tina Hutchinson against Cal State Fullerton in the 1983-84 season.

Perry, who scored 21 consecutive points for the Aztecs (14-0, 5-0) in the first half, tied Hutchinson’s record for most field goals in a game with 20.

Fresno State fell to 11-5 and 2-3.

Biola defeated host Point Loma Nazarene in a nonleague game, 70-49. Biola (12-1) was led by Mary Beth Nelson with 19 points and Donna Pollema with 18. Camille Armijo led Point Loma (9-7) with 16. Point Loma shot 29% from the field, Biola 39%. Point Loma, which trailed, 41-26, at halftime, committed 19 turnovers and was outrebounded, 43-33.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Shaun Wise and Andy McKoy scored 22 points each to lead Winthrop to a 69-63 victory over U.S. International Saturday night in South Carolina.

Wise was 8 for 11 from the floor, including 4 for 4 from 3-point range. McKoy was 6 for 13 from the floor and 10 for 12 from the foul line.

U.S. International (7-13), behind the play of Paul Wilson, moved to a 31-28 lead at the half. The second half stayed close until the 14:12 mark, when Winthrop made a 5-0 run to lead 44-37.

USIU came back to within two, 46-44, with 10:37 to play, but with 8:02 left, Wise and McKoy had pushed the advantage to 54-48.

USIU took its final lead with 4:36 to play on a Demetrius Laffitte layup that made it 59-58. Greg Washington, who finished with 12 points, scored for Winthrop (7-6) to make it 62-59 with 3:01 remaining. Wise and McKoy hit a pair of free throws to offset a Wilson basket and make it 66-61 with 24 seconds left.

Laffitte led USIU with 20 points.

Redlands easily defeated UCSD, 120-99, in a nonleague game at Triton Gym. Redlands was led by guard Robert Stone with 29 points, Jeffrey Van Fleet with 21, and Darryl Robinson with 20.

Greg Kund led UCSD with 19; Bill Gerlach had 16.

UCSD (5-9) shot just 41% from the field. Redlands made 10 3-pointers in the first half.

Christian Heritage (14-3) defeated Claremont-Mudd, 106-99, led by Brad Soucie, who scored a game-high 27 points, and Mark Kraatz, who added 23. Claremont Mudd (7-8) was led by Henry Albrecht with 25.

Westmont defeated Point Loma, 85-70, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma. Chad Kammerer led Westmont (8-7, 2-0) with a game-high 17, and Noel Matthews added 16.

Mark Ryan led Point Loma (3-12, 1-1) with 16 points, and Brian Thurston had 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Westmont shot 53% from the field, Westmont 40.

PADRES

Outfielder Marvell Wynne has agreed to a 1-year contract. Terms were not disclosed. Wynne was eligible for arbitration but did not file.

Wynne hit .264 in 128 games last year. He had career bests of 42 RBIs and 11 home runs but homered only twice in the last half of the season.

Dickie Thon is the only Padre who has filed for arbitration. Walt Terrell is still eligible to file by Monday’s deadline.
