Units under PLO leader Yasser Arafat’s control have not undertaken or planned guerrilla attacks in more than two months, Israel’s chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Dan Shomron, has disclosed, according to a report in the New York Times. The newspaper, in a report from Jerusalem, said Shomron made the statement to the Israeli Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. He said that Fatah and other units under the command of Arafat, leader of the Palestine Libration Organization, “have in practice halted hostile operations and also halted preparations for operations” since November. Last month, Arafat renounced terrorism and recognized Israel’s right to exist.
