Foreign peace activists called for the destruction of nuclear weapons and the immediate removal of U.S. military bases from the Philippines. The call was made in a statement issued after a Manila conference on peace and development in Asia and the Pacific, attended by about 200 delegates. “The conference demands the immediate and unconditional dismantling of U.S. military bases in the Philippines,” the statement said. “We view with hope the continuing dialogue between the United States and the Soviet Union, renewed prospects for disarmament and ongoing attempts to resolve wars and other conflicts.” The United States maintains the strategic Clark Air Base and Subic Bay Naval Base outside Manila.
