Czech Skier Wins Cross-Country Race

Alzbeta Havrancikova of Czechoslovakia won the women’s inaugural 30-kilometer World Cup cross country ski race Sunday, leading throughout the grueling event.

Havrancikova, 25, covered the distance in 1 hour 29 minutes 30.9 seconds to edge East Germany’s Gabriele Hess and score her second World Cup victory of the season.

Hess, a 17-year-old two-time world junior champion, had a time of 1:30:29.6 in the freestyle event.
