About a dozen real-life nuns showed up at the Charles Street Playhouse in Boston to audition for the musical “Nunsense,” a gentle spoof of convent life. One wore sequins. Another, in full Carmelite habit and veil, sat center stage and played spoons to a bluegrass tune. The five nuns judged most talented will be given cameo roles in the show for one week. Two dollars from every ticket sold will be donated to a charity. One auditioning sister said that participating in a professional musical will show young women “we’re not just behind the walls doing our work. There is joy.”
