Apple Computer Inc., as widely expected, will announce today a new high-powered version of its popular Macintosh personal computer that uses the top-of-the-line Motorola 68030 microprocessor. The new model is designed to compete against the most sophisticated PCs from IBM and Compaq. Apple said the machine will be available immediately and range in price from $4,869 to $6,569, depending on features. Unisys Corp., meanwhile, introduced its new Micro A computer, a machine the company claims provides the power of a mainframe computer in a desktop machine. The Micro A uses advanced semiconductor and packaging technology, dubbed SCAMP, that packs mainframe power in a single chip, Unisys said. The new computer is priced at $20,365.
