Florida’s Supreme Court today refused to postpone mass murderer Ted Bundy’s execution, rejecting his lawyers’ plea to allow lower courts to decide whether the suspected serial killer was sane during his murder trial.

Florida Atty. Gen. Bob Butterworth said after the hearing that Bundy’s attorneys were “grasping at a straw.” Bundy, a former law student found guilty of three Florida murders but suspected in the slayings of three dozen women in several Western states, faces execution Tuesday. Gov. Bob Martinez signed the death warrant last Tuesday, less than an hour after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear new arguments to set aside Bundy’s death sentence.
