A Bay Area high school that expelled students for repeated absenteeism has agreed to pay more than $100,000 in damages to the pupils, a lawyer said. The policy of the Sequoia Union High School District probably resulted in the expulsion of as many as 3,000 students between 1982 and 1986, said David Neely, attorney for the students. Neely said the school would drop students from any class in which they had 10 unexcused absences or 20 excused absences and would expel anyone who had fewer than four classes left. He said state law permits a school to discipline a student for cutting class, but does not allow expulsion.
