SDSU Women Come Back to Beat UNLV

Chana Perry scored 17 points, Julie Evans added 12 and Crystal Lee had 10 assists as the San Diego State University women’s basketball team came back to defeat host Nevada Las Vegas, 55-51, in a nonconference game between national powers.

SDSU (15-1) is ranked No. 12 but coming off a 99-80 loss Thursday to Long Beach. UNLV, ranked 19th, led at halftime, 28-26.

Lee made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 7 seconds to play to ice the victory for SDSU.

Pauline Jordan scored a game-high 19 points for UNLV (15-2).

UC San Diego was outshot from the field but made 6 of 15 3-point attempts and defeated Colby (Maine) College, 81-72, to advance to the championship of the Smith College National Invitational Tournament in Northampton, Mass.

Tracy Ragatz, who was 5 of 10 from 3-point range, led UCSD (11-4) with 27 points. Beth Koenig, 9 of 10 from the free throw line, had 20 points and Jill Koster added 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Kim Derrington scored 24 for Colby.

In today’s championship game, UCSD plays host Smith College, which defeated Trinity College (San Antonio, Tex.), 58-46.

Candida Echeverria scored 14 points, Rochelle Lightner 12 and Julie Lemery 10 as the University of San Diego defeated Santa Clara, 69-60, in a West Coast Athletic Conference game.

USD is 6-8 and 2-2. Jennifer Lucas scored a game-high 19 for Santa Clara (5-13, 1-3).

Fresno Pacific outrebounded host Point Loma Nazarene, 45-28, and made 21 of 26 free throws (81%) en route to a 78-54 Golden State Athletic Conference victory.

Camille Armijo led Point Loma Nazarene (11-8, 1-2) with 18 points, Shelly Stokes had 12 and Shannon Anderson added 10.

Kellie Fry scored a game-high 19 for Fresno Pacific (12-4, 4-0). Robin Turner and Irene Robles added 12 each, and Cindy Seymore had 11.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene didn’t take its first lead until 1:05 remained but then hung on for a 79-77 victory over visiting Fresno Pacific in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Mark Ryan made two free throws with 1:05 to play to put Point Loma Nazarene ahead, 75-74, Shawn Stroud made two with 16 seconds to play to make it 77-74, and then Stroud hit two more with 11 seconds remaining to give Point Loma Nazarene some breathing room.

Ryan led Point Loma Nazarene (5-12, 3-1) with 21 points, Brian Thurston added 20, and Mark Bulgin and Stroud each had 12.

Donnie Johnson scored 23 points for Fresno Pacific (12-6, 3-1).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge handed UC San Diego its fourth consecutive loss, 15-8, 15-8, 12-15, 15-9, in a nonconference match. Jeff Babcock had 14 kills and Nate Brown 11 for UCSD (0-4).
