Marc Girardelli of Luxembourg won his third straight World Cup downhill, recording the fastest time on the circuit’s longest course, the 4,185-meter Lauberhorn, at Wengen, Switzerland.

Girardelli, bidding for his third World Cup overall title in a 10-year career, finished in 2 minutes 25.76 seconds. His average speed was 64.3 m.p.h.

Switzerland’s Pirmin Zurbriggen, defending World Cup overall champion, was second, 1.92 seconds behind Girardelli. Two of Zurbriggen’s Swiss teammates, Daniel Mahrer and Gustav Oehrli, were third and fourth.
