A private London hospital denied British newspaper reports that it paid Turkish peasants $3,500 to donate their kidneys for transplant. The Humana Wellington Hospital said it has no evidence to back allegations being made in Turkey that the donors each received cash for one of their kidneys. It added that it will review its procedures and cooperate with an inquiry by authorities. In the latest report, the Sunday Telegraph said Turkish police last week arrested a bogus army colonel and charged him with masterminding a scheme to trick peasants into selling their kidneys.
