In Brief : Japan Spending Linked to Hirohito
- Share via
TOKYO — Emperor Hirohito’s long illness discouraged spending by Japanese households in October and November, a government report said today.
The Management and Coordination Agency said Japan’s consumer spending in November rose 1.7% from a year ago after seasonal adjustments, averaging $2,150.
In nominal terms, the figure was up 2.8% over a year ago, the agency said.
Household expenditures in October gained 1.4% from a year ago.
Agency officials attributed the moderate rise in October and November to Hirohito’s long illness.
Hirohito, the longest-reigning monarch in Japan’s 2,600-year court history, died Jan. 7 after a 111-day battle against abdominal cancer. The funeral service is scheduled for Feb. 24.
