Monsanto Co.’s 1988 net income rose 36% to $591 million. Revenue climbed to $8.29 billion, up 9%. The St. Louis-based company, whose businesses range from plastics to agriculture to drugs, said its agricultural unit was a major contributor to the results and that its NutraSweet Co. benefited from increased demand worldwide and manufacturing cost improvements.
