Poway City Manager James Bowersox underwent surgery for cancer Monday at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.

Assistant City Manager John Fitch said that Bowersox was diagnosed as having throat cancer, but the disease was termed “not life-threatening.”

Bowersox will remain hospitalized for four or five days and will be on a 30-day medical leave, Fitch said. During Bowersox’s absence, Fitch will assume the city manager’s duties.
