Australia will double to 4,000 its annual quota for Vietnamese seeking permission to leave their homeland, an embassy official said today.

Embassy Counselor Gervais Appave said Australia wants to help relieve the burden on Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries to which Vietnamese have fled. The new quota, to begin in July, applies only to Vietnamese who want to settle through a U.N.-sponsored orderly departure program. In addition, Australia allows 6,000 Indochinese to resettle in Australia each year.
