In Brief : Injury Sidelines Sprinter Christie

Linford Christie, Europe’s fastest sprinter, withdrew today from his first scheduled indoor race of the new track season with a hamstring injury.

The British 100-meter Olympic silver medalist had been due to compete over 200 meters at Saturday’s Dairy Crest Games between Britain and West Germany in Glasgow, Scotland.

He was replaced by another Seoul medalist, John Regis, a member of Britain’s silver-medal-winning 400-meter sprint quartet.

Christie, who originally was set to double up at 60 and 200 meters in Glasgow, suffered the injury during a training run earlier this week. He was hoping to be fit enough to tackle just the longer event but decided not to take any risks with a busy international indoor program in prospect.
