Cipher Data Products, a manufacturer of computer tape drives, a data storage device, reported a $3.2-million profit on $53.9 million in revenue for its second quarter ended Dec. 31, up from a $2.2-million profit on sales of $45.4 million over the same three months a year previous. The revenues were a record for a quarter.

For the six months ended Dec. 31, Cipher Data profits stood at $7 million on revenue of $105.9 million, up from a profit of $2.9 million on revenue of $84.7 million over the same two quarters the year before.

Gross margins improved to 31.9% of sales from 30.9% for the year-before quarter, chairman Gary Liebl said in a prepared statement.
