The leader of a guerrilla assault on an army base in Argentina is a leftist extremist linked to the 1980 assassination of deposed Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza, official sources in Buenos Aires said. They reported that Enrique Gorriaran Merlo directed the attack and seizure Monday of the base, in the capital’s La Tablada suburb. Gorriaran, a former leader of the defunct People’s Revolutionary Army, is believed to have fled before army and police forces retook the base. He led a team of Argentine and Nicaraguan guerrillas who assassinated Somoza in the Paraguayan capital of Asuncion, Gorriaran himself has said in published interviews.
