A dispute between Roman Catholics and Jews over a convent inside the former Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz appears to have been resolved, a Vatican official said. Jewish leaders expressed outrage in 1984 when Carmelite nuns opened the convent in Poland on the grounds of the death camp. They demanded that the nuns move out so the camp would remain a silent tribute to Jews killed there. The Vatican official said a letter from Cardinal Franciszek Macharski of Krakow explained that the nuns will have a new convent “constructed on separate land.”
