The government announced today it will cut its armed forces by 12,000 soldiers and reduce its army budget 15% in the next two years.

The move followed announcements of troop cuts by East Germany and Hungary and of defense spending reductions in Poland. All four nations acted after the Soviet Union announced Dec. 7 that it will reduce its forces by 500,000 men by 1991. This will include withdrawing 50,000 troops and 5,000 tanks from East Germany, Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
