From Times staff and wire service reports

The white powder seized when former New Orleans Saints quarterback Joe Gilliam was arrested after a chase last week was not cocaine, police said.

They said laboratory tests indicated that the powder probably was baking soda. Gilliam, 38, was arrested Jan. 20 and booked for possession of cocaine and resisting arrest.

Lt. Yvonne Bechet said Gilliam was driving in New Orleans at 3:10 a.m. when he saw a police car and sped away, apparently trying to elude the officers.

After a lengthy chase, Gilliam was stopped and arrested, and the powder was confiscated, police said.
