International Amateur Athletic Federation officials are waiting for Soviet documents to begin the process of recognizing Rodion Gataullin’s pole vault mark of 19 feet 8 1/4 inches as a world indoor record.

Gataullin, a silver medalist at the Seoul Olympics and the bronze medalist in the 1987 World Championships, cleared the height at a meet in Leningrad, the Soviet news agency Tass reported Monday.

The previous record of 19-7 was set in 1987 by Seoul gold medalist Sergei Bubka, also of the Soviet Union.
