PELVIC THRUSTS: Who’s that cocky cover boy on the February issue of L.A. Style? None other than Elvis Presley, whose Hollywood years are expertly documented (by Steve Pond) and illustrated with rare--and some never-before published pix of The King (from the Michael Ochs Archives). Taken by an unknown photographer, they show the Big E in movieland, lunching outside the honey wagon and horsing around on the set of “Love Me Tender.”

Our favorite anecdote spotlights Elvis’ gawky deference to his elders. In one scene, he was asked to angrily wave a pistol while his screen mother, Mildred Dunnock, snapped: “Put down that gun!” Instead of growling back, as scripted, Elvis sheepishly purred, “Yes, ma’am” and dropped his weapon. To celebrate its new issue, L.A. Style threw a “Heartbreak Hotel” party at (where else?) Heartbreak Cafe on Earthquake Night. The festivities included a show by Elvis impersonator El Vez, who wowed the likes of Nicolas Gage, Scott Baio, Ray Manzarek, Michael Des Barres and Fred Dryer--who when the earthquake hit, quipped to a party organizer: “Great special effects!”
