A coalition of Michigan advertisers and newspaper readers said it will ask a federal appeals court in Washington to reconsider a three-judge panel’s decision to allow a partial merger of Detroit’s major daily newspapers. Michigan Citizens for an Independent Press will ask the court to block the merger of the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press until all 13 judges can rehear the appeal, attorneys for the organization said. The three appeals judges, in an opinion issued Friday, said the newspapers qualified for a partial exemption from federal antitrust laws and could implement the proposed joint operating agreement.
