An Argentine ship that ran aground in Antarctica three days earlier sank, the Argentine navy announced. The 400-foot Bahia Paraiso was carrying supplies and tourists to an Argentine base when it struck rocks off the Antarctic coast near Palmer Station, a U.S. research base, gouging a 30-foot hole in its hull and causing a diesel fuel spill. A spokesman for the National Science Foundation said that the leaking fuel had killed tiny shrimp and caused birds to sicken and that, if the ship’s full load of diesel fuel escapes, it could cause major damage to the environment. The passengers and crew were safely evacuated after the mishap.
