Bells rang out across Iran and hundreds of prisoners were freed as the country celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Islamic revolution. The bells on schools and churches began ringing at 9:03 a.m., the moment on Feb. 1, 1979, when the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini arrived home from exile to a tumultuous welcome by millions of his supporters, Tehran Radio said. The radio did not say what Khomeini was doing to mark the day. The festivities--which include cultural activities and street reenactments of revolutionary events--are the first held in peacetime since 1980, when the Iran-Iraq War began.
