Karpov Wins Third Game in Chess Match

Anatoly Karpov of the Soviet Union defeated Johann Hjartarson of Iceland in the third game of their quarterfinal Candidates chess match Wednesday evening in Seattle. Karpov, who was world chess champion from 1975 to 1985, leads, 2 1/2- 1/2, in the six-game match.

The Candidates matches will determine the challenger to current champion Garry Kasparov for the next world chess championship match, in 1990.
