A Washington lawyer has become the first woman ever appointed to Harvard University’s governing board in the school’s 353-year history, a school spokesman said today.

The Harvard Overseers unanimously approved the appointment of Judith Richards Hope to the Harvard Corp. Hope, 48, is an attorney specializing in transportation law for the Los Angeles-based firm of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky and Walker. She served as a domestic policy adviser to President Gerald R. Ford, general counsel to last year’s presidential campaign of Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) and cochair of Lawyers for Reagan-Bush in 1984. She is the daughter-in-law of comedian Bob Hope.
