Authorities in Tibet, fearing new violence after 16 months of anti-Chinese unrest, warned against calls for independence in the region and announced the cancellation of a festival marking Tibetan Buddhism’s most important holiday. The moves reflect government worries over persistent protests led by Tibetan monks against Chinese Communist rule. Nine people were killed in fierce rioting at the end of the holiday festival last March.
