Local News in Brief : Countywide : Alzheimer’s Researcher Receives $250,000 Grant

A UC Irvine professor known for his research into Alzheimer’s disease has received a $250,000 grant and award from Metropolitan Life Foundation of New York.

Carl Cotman, a professor of psychobiology at UCI, will receive $200,000 to support his research into the debilitating and fatal disease and $50,000 as a prize.

Cotman, a pioneer in research of brain chemistry, has developed approaches to Alzheimer’s disease that may be applicable to other brain disorders.

Cotman, who accepted the award last week at a luncheon in New York, also recently received the Leadership & Excellence in Alzheimer’s Disease Award from the National Institute on Aging.
