Colgate-Palmolive Co. said earnings hit $317.8 million for 1988, a fivefold increase from the previous year. The New York-based consumer products company credited a $125-million gain on the sale of its Kendall health-care subsidiary and the effectiveness of cost-reduction programs, plus particularly strong performances by overseas operations and Hill’s Pet Products. Revenue rose 8.4% to $4.7 billion.
