A jet chartered by the United Nations arrived in Kabul today with 30 tons of wheat and dried milk to help feed the most needy people in the embattled capital.

The Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 707, emblazoned with “UN” on one side, was loaded with 238 bags of supplies to be handed out to 30,000 people targeted as the most vulnerable to the bitter winter and food shortages plaguing Kabul. The United Nations originally chartered an Egyptian Airlines plane to fly in shipments to Kabul, but on Wednesday, officials said the crew backed out because of concern for their safety. A six-member Ethiopian crew agreed to do the job.
