A man accused of killing 14 relatives disrupted his murder trial Friday by slugging the prosecutor in front of the jury, sending spectators ducking beneath their seats.

Law enforcement officers immediately swarmed over the defendant, R. Gene Simmons, subdued him and whisked him out a side door. After a recess, he was brought back in handcuffs.

Simmons, 48, already has been sentenced to die for the slayings of two people during a 40-minute shooting rampage on Dec. 28, 1987, in Russellville.
